POWER OF ONE The Governor's One-on-One Volunteer program is a statewide initiative that Governor Hunt began in 1982 to promote the development of adult volunteer programs. The Pitt County chapter, Power of One, began in 1996. The Power of One is sponsored by Communities in Schools of Pitt County and is housed with the Pitt County Office.

The program is designed to offer new perspectives to youth through one-on-one activities such as ball games, picnics, swimming, movies, and tutoring sessions. An adult volunteer is matched with a Pitt County Youth between the ages of 6-17 to serve as a mentor. The role of the volunteer is that of a friend and role model for the youth. Through developing a friendship with the youth, the volunteer makes a positive impact on every aspect of the child's social, emotional, intellectual, and physical life. All of these serve to increase the young person's self esteem, resulting in altered patterns of behavior and leading to a more productive life.
