Reality Store
Communities In Schools offer Students a Taste of Reality
Middle School students experience an hour of reality, through the
“Reality Store” program. Communities In Schools of Pitt County has
received financial support from the Business Professional Women to
offer this invaluable opportunity to students in Pitt County.
Exposing these students to the realities of jobs, single and two
parent households, bills, and children is the focus of this project.
Each student is given a profile, including his or her job title,
income, marital status, and number of dependent children. They move
through various stations, in their school gym/library, receiving
their paychecks and then spending them on the essentials, such as
rent/mortgage, utilities, food, and transportation. They may or may
not have the means to pay for a cellular phone, go out to eat, or go
to the movies. It is our hope that these students will better
understand what the future may hold and how their decisions can and
will affect their lives.
You have the opportunity to be involved in this very worthwhile
project! We are in need of individuals or groups to staff these
“reality booths," at middle schools across Pitt County.
If you are interested in volunteering to faciltate a Reality
Store, please contact Communities in Schools at 252-757-9349 or

Communities In Schools of Pitt County held a "Reality Store"
at CM Eppes Middle School in March. Seventh and Eighth grade
students attended this day long event held in the school media
center. Over sixty community volunteers from Oakmont Baptist Church,
The Communities In School Board of Directoras and an ECU Fraternity
spent the day teaching students about finances in the real world.
Each student was given a check register, provided by Wachovia Bank,
with a description of the job they held, the amount of money they
earned, and their family situation. The students then went to
stations to pruchase homes, insurance, medical services, groceries,
utilities, automobiles and child care. A trip to the bank was a part
of the learning experience. Student comments were, "Wow, I am going
to have to sell my SUV and get a cheaper car". and "I have spent all
my money and don't have any food". Several students wrote on their
evaluation that the! y learned a lot and the most important thing
they learned was to stay in school and get a good education so that
they can get a good job and afford the things they need. Communities
In Schools hopes to have the Reality Store in all of Pitt County's
Middle Schools next year.
